Full Moon and Empty Arms

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

3:27 a.m. and I’ve got the jitters under the silvery moon (catch the eclipse anyone?).

My friend Rush returns to LA from his class reunion trip to OKC tomorrow morning and he and I had dinner last night with my son, Jack, up from New Orleans for a couple of days.  Of course, Aunt Marty and her friend, Frieda, are still here from Mississippi and still caring for Mom, who had colon cancer surgery.  Did I mention that my daughter’s birthday was the 27th and that we just said “adieu” to my sister MindOverMary?

So, I was trying to practice law today and do some of Mom’s errands and maybe I had too much coffee or something, you think?

I tried to watch the video of Sen. Craig explaining how unhappy he is — I don’t know how many times he repeated he was “not gay” without ever telling us if he was a homosexual — but I faced an insurmountable obstacle.  In the video I tried to watch, he walks onscreen, stands behind a podium and says:  “First, I want to thank you all for coming out … “.  I screamed with laughter and missed the next two-three minutes.  Ended up having to read the transcript.

Might as well have Chertoff as the next Attorney General.  Look at what a good job he did with Katrina.  It’s my understanding that ‘Fredo was forced to resign as just not being quite incompetent enough for this administration.  Who would have guessed that anyone could make John Ashcroft look reasonable and make me miss Richard Nixon and his crew?

I see the Democratic Party National Committee has stripped the state of Florida of its delegates and refused to allow candidates to campaign in their primary because the DNC doesn’t like Florida’s early timing.  Why the hell not?  It’s clear that as long as Diebold sells vote machines, Dems are unlikely to win there.

In a post below, I’m quibbling about gender roles and trying to bait the Debster to defend her “too much testosterone” theory.  I wonder if she’ll admit the Dems seem to need MORE not less of the stuff.  I’m really thinking of just bagging politics and America both at the same time.  Just get the hell out.  My dream election in ‘08 would be Kucinich vs. Ron Paul.  Wouldn’t that be fun?

Devolution

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

I used to believe in the theory of evolution but now I’ve found out some bad and crazy men also believed in the theory of evolution so the theory of evolution must be bad and crazy.  Right?  Maybe not so much, but that doesn’t stop Ann Coulter and her sponsor, Coral Ridge Ministries, led by the imminent Pat Robertson.

It seems that Ann’s education never clued her into the deal.  You see, Adolph Hitler was trying to kill the Jews because he believed in Darwin and was trying to breed a better human.  She’s shocked, shocked to discover gambling in Rick’s Americain.  They think the theory should, therefore, be tossed on the dustbin of history as the bad idea it always was, now that we know it’s responsible for all the atrocities of World War II and all the millions of deaths, oh my.  Kids, you have to read this.  It’s so bad it’s funny.  It’s just so stupid you can’t believe they can publish this with a straight face.

If you don’t know who Betty Bowers is, you should.  Right, Suz?

Anyways, I think I’ve found my Christmas list stocking stuffers bonanza and it’s on my list of I-really-really-want-this.

If you order one of these for yourself, let me know so I can take you off my list.

My romantic life is a little bit of a sore subject for me lately.  I got kidded about being some kind of lothario at dinner tonight and it annoyed me.  The thing that makes it such a sore point is that I haven’t had a date since last Thanksgiving — haven’t asked anyone out.  I’m not in any kind of relationship at all and on purpose.  But, I’m like a reformed smoker or drunk.  I’m in the early stages of my relationship sobriety and it still stings to be presented with temptations and jibes.

So, I’m taking myself all seriously and all, as you can tell.  Tonight I ran into a little something called MoanMyIP.com and it made me giggle and guffaw. (yes, I guffaw on occasion.  why wouldn’t I? what’s it to you?)  HOWEVER, please read the whole thing, including the small print. It actually happens to be very very educational about the footprint you leave when you surf the web.

Is there anything good about men?

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

the above is the title of a speech by a prominent Florida State University professor and it’s damn thought provoking.  If you think it’s going to be a rehash of Maureen Dowd’s “Are Men Necessary”, you couldn’t be more wrong.

A “money” quote:

When I say I am researching how culture exploits men, the first reaction is usually “How can you say culture exploits men, when men are in charge of everything?” This is a fair objection and needs to be taken seriously. It invokes the feminist critique of society. This critique started when some women systematically looked up at the top of society and saw men everywhere: most world rulers, presidents, prime ministers, most members of Congress and parliaments, most CEOs of major corporations, and so forth — these are mostly men.

Seeing all this, the feminists thought, wow, men dominate everything, so society is set up to favor men. It must be great to be a man.

The mistake in that way of thinking is to look only at the top. If one were to look downward to the bottom of society instead, one finds mostly men there too. Who’s in prison, all over the world, as criminals or political prisoners? The population on Death Row has never approached 51% female. Who’s homeless? Again, mostly men. Whom does society use for bad or dangerous jobs? US Department of Labor statistics report that 93% of the people killed on the job are men. Likewise, who gets killed in battle? Even in today’s American army, which has made much of integrating the sexes and putting women into combat, the risks aren’t equal. This year we passed the milestone of 3,000 deaths in Iraq, and of those, 2,938 were men, 62 were women.

One of the conclusions he reaches is that we have been forced into a situation in which men are rewarded for large pools of shallow relationships while women have concentrated on deep, close, personal relationships.

It concludes, among other things, that the pool of our ancestors is skewed towards women because perhaps as many as 60 percent of men never reproduce compared to only 20 percent of non-reproductive women.  Elsewhere, I’ve read that perhaps half of one percent of today’s global population was sired by Genghis Khan on his march West — the great khan preserved for his personal attentions all the most beautiful of the women of every town and village conquered.

Sure hope the Debster reads this.  I’d like to hear how her “there’s too much testosterone in the world today” theory stacks up to this.
